This suburban Greek outpost turns the stereotypically stuffy taverna into a modern and very popular eatery. Here, chef/owner David Tsirekas can be found spinning traditional Greek food into more contemporary dishes, with creations like pork belly baklava. An entree of vromiko (translated as ‘greasy’) is apparently a hangover cure for early-morning revellers of the Athens nightclub scene, in which a rich mix of loukaniko (sausage) and butter beans in tomato sauce is served with chips, an egg and oozing kasseri cheese. Local produce is combined with Greek style throughout the menu. For example, a main of lightly fried NSW John Dory is served with lemon skordalia and wild green beans. Mushroom and truffle moussaka, succulent pork souvlaki and a side of ‘Greekslaw’ are also excellent choices. For dessert, donut balls come dipped in honey and walnut, and the cherry and semolina custard filo is outrageously good. Frankly, the whole lot should have you saying, ‘Get me to the Greek’. Just phone before going, as there’s talk of changes later this year.
